“I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. … No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.
Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:3,5-9 (NIV)
The Joshua Commission as shared Monday, anchors in the great commission, and the man who lead God’s people into the promised land. Joshua was not perfect but we use him as a model of a Kingdom Man. some reasons are captured below
From the Bible we learn that:
Joshua was about 80 years old when he accepted the mantle of leadership of Israel from Moses
Though the land had been promised by God, the land still had to be taken, overcoming the enemy that was occupying the land.
Despite being born in slavery, Joshua & Caleb’s origins did not prevent them from providing a faithful report. These were the only two from Egypt who crossed over the Jordan into the Promised Land.
While in the Wilderness, Joshua learned and was mentored for 40 years.
To successfully lead his people, Joshua had to “Be strong and very courageous” as well as to meditate on the Book of the Law day and night, speak it, and be careful to do everything written in it.
The name Joshua is based on the Hebrew “Yahweh is salvation“. A later rendering of that name into English is Jesus.
Lessons from Joshua’s life that we can use for TJC:
Joshua did not let his age (~80 years) keep him from his later career in leading God’s people. You are never too young or old for God to use you.
Though the land was promised, he had to fight to possess it.
Joshua did not let his very humble beginning or his ancestor’s legacies keep him from following God.
Joshua sought and was mentored by another leader. Joshua then led other leaders. Who is mentoring you, and who are you mentoring?
Joshua based his actions AND his words on God’s word.
Joshua was “strong and very courageous”.
The name Joshua is a progenitor of the name Jesus.
Daily Battle Order: Read the first chapter of Joshua to your family and ask them what they think about him. Consider how you can “Be strong and very courageous” in leading your family and those closest to you.
Ask them who they think personifies a Joshua in our country today?
