The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. ~Genesis 2:15
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” ~Genesis 2:18
This week we are looking at God-defined roles for Kingdom men, grounded in Genesis.
Today we look at God’s role for Kingdom men as Provider.
God gave Adam a job and a place to live (Genesis 2:15) before there was an Eve (Genesis 2:18). I heard that advice when single, learning that I needed to look to God first, make Him my foundation, and not whine that somehow I am not complete because I had not found my own Eve.
Now married, I asked my wife what my being a “Provider” means to her. Her words were “Stability and Safety”. She immediately pointed to a female we know well that has a home, food, and material goods amply provided, but it comes with manipulation and no peace; that Financial stability by itself doesn’t automatically give Emotional stability. What my wife said that she appreciates most about our home is that she doesn’t have to worry; that she feels the freedom to be who God wants her to be.
Like all families, we face our own difficulties. As a family we know that we face our difficulties together, with God.
When I hear Provider, I look to put family concerns on my back (that I put on God), so that my family feels safe in God’s hands. My test: when I wake my wife in the morning, is she smiling at peace, or frowning consumed by worry. Fortunately, most days my wife is smiling in the morning.
Daily Battle Order: Men: Consider today what is a “Provider”, and what is God’s standard for your role as a “Provider”. How are you doing in meeting that Standard? Discuss with your family at the dinner table tonight.
