“Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words? God”
Job 38:2
You know we could stop right there with today’s DBO and just ponder those words for a while. Do you have an answer for God?”
Three books of the Bible are regarded as wisdom literature- Proverbs, Job and Ecclesiastes. They hold the wisdom of generations of Godly people and in Job a rather lengthy and direct conversation with God.
I value this book as it is an incredibly personal story that starts when God proclaims to satan, that Job is one of the finest people on earth; and Job is then put to the test with absolute disasters.
One test/lesson that challenges me is when Job’s friends (Eliphaz, Bildad, Zophar and later Elihu) gather to comfort Job and say NOTHING for an entire week. I can barely sit in silence in a car with someone for a few minutes, without turning on the radio or talking to fill the space. I can’t imagine an entire day, none the less a week, listening to someone suffer. Heck I can reasonably solve many problems shared with me (like my wife) in the first few minutes of details- usually much to my dismay LOL. .
Eventually Job’s friends apparently had enough and start to school Job for - planting trouble, deserving punishment, even saying “God is punishing you less than you deserve (after losing everything important to him). That doesn’t go well as Job replies “stop assuming I’m guilty for I have done no wrong”Job 6:29
“Then the Lord spoke” Job 38:1
Daily Battle Order:
Job concludes with an incredible question and answer session between God and Job - with Job now being the one to be silenced and listen as incapable of understanding God’s ways. Silence allows us to listen; and is an area I need to work in. Silence is a spiritual discipline that takes intentional practice. I encourage you to spend 10 minutes in complete silence today and each of the next 7 days - no radio, talking, cell phone, book (even Bible) and quiet your mind. It will be a struggle and expect distractions. Let us know what you learn.
