Victory in the Community: Volunteerism

via TJC

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

‭‭1 John‬ ‭3:17-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Last week's DBOs on finances were both timely and challenging to me (go back and read them if you haven’t already). When I got the assignment to write on volunteerism as a path to victory this week it just felt like someone really wanted to pile on the convictions for areas in my life that need improvement.

I didn’t have a verse that just came to mind and I had to use the spiritual tool of Google to go looking. Try it. Trust me there are plenty. It was convicting.

Honestly I don’t really volunteer much at all in the sense of helping others who are in need. I’m busy. I do good things, mostly for and with men who are seeking to be Kingdom Men. But I don’t volunteer at the food bank, the homeless shelter or the community kitchen. I’m not in any clubs like the Lions or the Rotary. I don’t build homes with Habitat for Humanity. I don’t stop to talk to the homeless guy with his sign outside the Walmart.

Speaking words of truth is pretty easy but I’m not getting my hands dirty for others much at all. I’m really going to need to wrestle with this and figure out how I’m going to fix it personally.

Daily Battle Order:

Are you doing any volunteering? If so, invite some slacker like me to join you. It may just be the push we need. If not, use that magic Google again and start looking for a place to give it a shot this month. There is a victory promise for all of us if we do it for the Lord and not human masters (that just sounds like a job). So let’s all find a place to give back as volunteers!!

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:23-24‬ ‭NIV‬‬
