The Protector

Via TJC

We are continuing this week’s examination of the role of Husbands as Protector.

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, ” ~ Ephesians 5:25 (NIV)

The first verse that popped into my head when I thought of the husband as a protector was the verse above. But protecting our wives is much more than loving them well. It also involves protecting them physically, emotionally, sexually, financially, and spiritually.

We men naturally think about protecting our wives physically first. Right? Even godless men come to the aid of their wives if she is threatened. I would quickly give my life to protect my wife from harm. When I travel, I always make sure there are a couple of trusted friends within reach who can come to her aid if needed.

But I fail miserably, at times, to protect my wife emotionally. I can get short with her. I am not as conscious of her emotional needs, especially during football or hunting season. I need to protect her heart. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.” As a husband, I also need to watch over my wife’s heart.

Daily Battle Order:

What are some ways you can step up as protector of your wife this week? How can you protect her emotions, your marriage bed (Hebrews 13:40), her financial security, or her spiritual growth?

Don’t just think about stepping up as a John Wayne type protecting your lady. It is so much more than that.
