The Enemy Doesn't Take the Summer Off.

"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." -1 Peter 5:8

Every year the United States military marks the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day with two words: “Critical Days”.

They call it the 100 Critical Days of Summer. The numbers are grim and consistent. More service members die in those hundred days than in many of the months some of them spend downrange. Not in combat. In cars, on lakes, on motorcycles, in backyards. They survive the battlefield and die at the barbecue.

June is also National Safety Month. Both exist for the same reason: a man is most likely to get hurt the moment he decides the danger has passed. Brother, that is a spiritual law before it is a safety statistic.

Summer is when we let our guard down. The schedule loosens. The men's group thins out. We skip a Sunday, then two. We tell ourselves we have earned a season off from the discipline. And the adversary, who has never once taken a vacation, prowls straight into the gap we left open. He does not go after the man standing watch on the wall. He goes after the man who climbed down to rest in the sun.

You are the watchman over your home. When you relax your vigilance, you are not the only one left exposed. Your wife is exposed. Your children are exposed. The prudent man sees danger and takes cover; the simple keep going and pay for it (Proverbs 22:3). This summer, be the prudent one. Stay on the wall.

This is a call to live awake - always aware - always vigilant. The Kingdom Man enjoys the long evenings and the cold water and the open road, and he does all of it sober-minded, with his eyes open and his armor on. Rest is not the same as dropping your guard. Even at rest, a soldier keeps his weapon clean.

Battle Order

Name the one place your guard is already down for the summer. The thinning quiet time. The phone you scroll past midnight. The trip with no plan to worship while you are away. Name it out loud, and close the gap today before it costs you something. Then do one literal thing for the people in your care: check the smoke detectors, the life jackets, the brakes, whatever stands between your family and harm. Vigilance is love made practical.

Father, You never slumber and never sleep. Make us watchmen worthy of the homes You have given us. Keep us sober-minded through these hundred days, awake to the enemy and awake to You. Guard our families on the road and on the water, and guard our hearts in the season of ease. In Jesus' name. Amen.
