Relationships (Outward): The Holy Huddle

via TJC

“I would not obey my teachers  or turn my ear to my instructors. And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.” —Proverbs 5:13-14

This week, we’ve talked about

  1. loving God

  2. loving ourselves

  3. loving our best friend (spouse)

  4. loving our children

  5. loving our close family & friends

Today, we are discussing our church family or, as we like to call it here in TJC, the “Holy Huddle.”

It is an honor to write on this topic as someone who has had quite the church experience in a short span of time. I’ve bounced around denominations, even hopped between Catholic/Protestant a few times. Today, my wife and I find ourselves in an amazing church family, but it took time…

A couple years ago, we discovered we were pregnant. However, we had zero (and I mean zero) local friends our age who were parents. It was a scary time for us considering we had no one to pick us up when we fell down parentally.

We understood we needed to find others in the same season of life as us to grow in our faiths together, to bounce wisdoms off each other, and to ensure we weren’t going insane! But when no Small Groups within our “demographic season of life” were open, we realized the Holy Spirit was guiding us to start our one.

August 2024 will mark one (1) year since we started the Small Group. It’s been quite the journey, including

  • 3 births,

  • 1 fertility battle (victorious!),

  • debt struggles,

  • 3 lengthy Army Reserve leaves,

  • many kids with colds,

  • 1 couple leaving the Small Group,

  • taking us husbands through BetterMan

  • now on Lesson #4 of Every Man A Warrior,

  • any many more ups & downs…

I love our Holy Huddle. While I enjoy seeing these families every Tuesday night, we recognize a time will come when it’s time to multiply. The Spirit hasn’t called anyone into that yet, but we know He will eventually. While we’re the Small Group’s “leaders,” I learn from my brothers & sisters in Christ within the Group as my “teachers” and “instructors” (Anchor Verse above) every week. I’m within their closest sphere of influence, and they’re within mine. It’s an absolute blast, privilege, and honor.

Daily Battle Order

Do you have a “Holy Huddle” within your church? Who is in that huddle? Is there someone you can add to that huddle? Maybe there is someone you need to remove. What is one way you can serve them this week? Maybe it’s reaching out for a prayer offer. Maybe it’s ensuring the pregnant women, young mothers, or elderly women are taken care of. Maybe it’s to offer some babysitting. Maybe it’s gathering a few bucks to share just like the Apostles did.
