“The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord.”
Proverbs 18:22 NLT
This week we have been discussing how our relationship with God touches every other relationship we are in. Our first relationship is with Him (upward). Then with ourselves (inward) and finally with everyone else (outward). Today with look at our relationship with our wife, co-laborer and best friend.
In the show, “How I Met Your Mother” the main character, Ted, shares stories and anecdotes about how he and their mom met became friends, and ultimately husband and wife. The show is a long answer to the question that many of us are often asked, “How did you meet?” It’s an important question and the answers can be fun, like a Hallmark “meet-cute”, embarrassing, or even boring. However it came to be, the circumstances of how you met are not as endearing as the story of why you are still together.
Solomon tells us, “The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the Lord.” I found my treasure and married my bride, my best friend, over 20 years ago. We’ve had our share of ups and downs. But through it all we have had each other’s back. We are for each other and we cover each other’s blind spots. Well most of the time…
A few weeks ago my wife, my treasure, let me know that she didn’t feel treasured. A situation had come up where my mom had offended us. Unfortunately it was fresh wound on a long list of cuts and scabs. The way I handled it with my shifted the offensive from me and made it seem like my wife was solely offended. She felt like I threw her under the bus, so that my mom’s feelings would be spared by the correction. She felt totally exposed. She was hurt. But not by my mom. She was hurt by me. I hurt my bride. I mishandled my treasure. I apologized and we’re working through it.
This episode is now about of our story. It’s part of the “How We Stayed Together” script. This story is worth sharing (possibly even more so than the how we met story) it the testimony of the second half of Solomon’s verse, it is the narrative of receiving favor from the Lord.
Daily Battle Order:
Kingdom Man, share your “How I Met Your Mother” story with you kids today. Let them connect with it. It’s literally their origin story. Then share an episode of your “How We Stayed Together” story. This is what builds their plot line, gives them grit and a model for their future. If you are no longer with their mother, be honest about that, honor her and build them up.
