Proverbs 19:21 “Many are the plans in the mind of a man but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.”
According to the Westminster Confession of Faith, the chief end of man (according to scripture) is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. OK, sounds good… So does that mean that we’re all supposed to know how to pull that off? Monday’s and Wednesday’s Daily Battle Order give you the what and the how in this process, the nuts and bolts as it were; to see that your talents and gifts are designed to fill the unique and important role that God has purposed for you. So that you can thrive as a believer and disciple maker. Today’s DBO is meant for you to read about an example of what that looks like. I trust our writers enough to believe that they did a good job answering those first two questions.
This is going to sound crazy, but this third part is too simple to explain… But being the contentious knucklehead that I am, I’m gonna try. Simple happens to be my specialty.
It turns out that fulfilling ones spiritual purpose is very seldom connected to a vocation. It also turns out that glorifying God and enjoying him is best accomplished in the successful completion of any task, on any job, in any setting. It’s just a matter of focus.
Premise: Humility makes it easier to fulfill your spiritual purpose. My mom was a nurse in the field of geriatrics. That consisted mostly of supervisory jobs at nursing homes. Over the years I became acquainted with many people in that field. Without question, the most Christlike, humble, consistent followers of Christ were the aides and orderlies. That should tell us something important about the difference between real purpose and selfish purpose. Think about what an orderly does and then think about what it would take to glorify God in that setting. That made me look at purpose in an entirely different light. Enough said. Carry on.
