This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways. Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the Lord. Haggai 1:7-8
Today, the Lord admonished us to “Give careful thought to your ways” and then to act, building His house. This reminds me of the night that I discerned whether God was calling me to be a Father in the Church or a father to my future children. The decision was monumental! I was dating my wife and, based on the answer to the question, our relationship would radically change: either we would break up after 5 years together or I would begin to craft a marriage proposal.
I went to a retreat that was specifically focused on discernment and a young Priest gave me great advice. Close your eyes and look into your future, down the path of both choices. See which one brings you joy, where you see God the most alive in your life. I did this and as I was praying and meditating on both paths, I had a clear vision in my head. The path to being part of the Church was black and white and cold while the prospect of raising my own children was vibrant and colorful and radiated joy and peace. That night I fasted and asked for confirmation of what I saw and felt and the next day I woke up confident that being a husband and a father was how God wanted me to honor him.
Daily Battle Order:
Remember that discernment takes time and patience, especially for large changes. When you discern, pray and envision your life after making your decisions. Do you have a sense of peace when walking the paths before you or are you uneasy? Trust that God wants the best for you and continue to pray that he will guide you.
