“Then I saw a great white throne and the one who sat on it; the earth and the heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Also another book was opened, the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their works, as recorded in the books.” - Revelation 20:11-12 NRSV
Our system of justice in America is centered around courts. Each court has a specific purpose and a specific authority to try crimes and render judgments. A trial is a formal process of the revelation of evidence to a jury. Both prosecutor and defender are allowed to present evidence and make their case. The seat of authority is given to a judge, who is the principal overseer of the proceeding.
We have been discussing different aspects of judgment all week, and this passage from Revelation describes what was revealed to John about what the last judgment would be like. The imagery should remind us of a court trial, because it shares many characteristics. In the end we will see the white throne and stand accused. The books will be opened, and every deviation from God’s standard we have ever committed will be read on the record. There are no words to describe how uncomfortable it will be to have every fault exposed before Jesus sitting on the white throne. Guilty as charged. Wages due. And the wages of sin are death.
But the good news for all of us men, is that there is another book. If Jesus is YOUR Lord, your name will be found in the book of life. For all of us that are in that book, the result of the trial is already written. Our judgment is: Guilty as charged. Paid…in…FULL!
