Modern Day idol worship

via TJC

“He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of me.” Matthew 10:37

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.” 1 John 2:16

“What is an idol? It is the thing or person or event that you put before God!

I’ve personally been wrestling with this topic of idolatry since selecting this topic to write about. I haven’t thought much about idol worship because I don’t bow down and worship false gods. However, as a Kingdom Man, I now choose to look with the eyes of my heart at those things I may have put before God unknowingly.

We live in a culture today that puts many things before God. Paul puts it this way,

“Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (covetousness) which amounts to idolatry. For it is on account of these things that the wrath of God will come, “

Colossians 3:5-6

Today, just as in the days of the Exodus, idolatry is the activity of the heart. What God wants from us and He always has wanted this is fellowship with us.

As John Piper states, “It starts in the heart: craving, wanting, enjoying, being satisfied by anything that you treasure more than God." That is an idol. Paul calls this covetousness — a disordered love or desire, loving more than God what ought to be loved less than God and only for the sake of God. But covetousness is the condition that this disordered heart is in, an act of loving too much what ought to be loved less. And that is why the wrath of God is coming. That is what idolatry looks like today. And it is everywhere in our culture.”

Our culture today does not place value on fellowship at all. That would require a loving and disciplined heart, honor and virtue in our relationships, and a Kingdom Vision.

Daily Battle Order:

Start thinking about idolatry with the end in mind…fellowship with God.

What is the thing or person or event that you have put before God? What would fellowship with God look like to you? It’s time to ask God to let you know what stands in the way for your fellowship with Him and then be ready to pull down those idols and enjoy true fellowship with God.

“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full” John 15:11

Nice DBO, Kyle #1! or is it #2? I don't know at this point.

Our souls were created to worship! If we do not worship Jesus, we WILL worship something/someone else.
