Incredible Children’s Day

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.”
— Psalm 127:3 (ESV)
My son scored his first basket in one of his games this year after two seasons of practices and games. We had told him that if he scored, we would celebrate—and we did just that. We grabbed ice cream and went to Chuck E. Cheese to play their favorite Ninja Turtles game.
One of his teammate’s parents told us that all their son wants to do now is play basketball because of the high-fives I give the kids whenever they do something great. Not to brag, but we won the championship 9–8, and one of our teammates—who couldn’t even reach the rim—made the game-winning free throw! Needless to say, I bought everyone ice cream!
Why does that make me so happy? Because when I was a kid, I was never picked first for a team. I was the smallest. But instead of resentment, I’ve held onto the excitement of being a kid.
How much more joy does God have for us as His children?
Sometimes we forget that no matter our age, we are still children before God. As adults we get wound tight with responsibilities, schedules, and pressure. We stop giving ourselves space for grace, wonder, and joy.
But we can still approach God with the innocence of expectation and amazement. Laugh. Enjoy what He has given you. Allow yourself to delight in His creation.
A simple cup of coffee tastes a lot better when you realize God delights in you too.

What was a favorite childhood pastime for you?
Mine was going on a store run with my dad to grab a candy bar and a Coke while beating the steering wheel like a drum and singing “Bad to the Bone.”
Invent an experience like that today. Let yourself be a kid again.
