Seeing as scripture teaches us that Christ is the ultimate husband/protector/redeemer, we thought it would be beneficial to look at the husband as a priest. In the same sense that Christ is the priest to his bride, the true Church of God, we are called to be priest to our brides. In this life, none of us are ever going to be just like Jesus, but we definitely can pay attention to some of the awesome guideposts that move us in that direction. With priest being a known office of Christ, there are some obvious, unifying characteristics that we should examine:
A true priest is obedient to God.
Luke 22:42
“saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
In truth, it’s hard to examine yourself and imagine having to do what Christ did. Remember, he did it for those he loved.
A true priest leads in true worship.
Hebrews 2:12
“I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”
One of my most lucid memories is that of my dad sitting us down on countless evenings and sharing the word of God and his insights into how to live, giving all the glory and credit to a holy God who saw fit to bring him up and have a family to love and to lead in worship.
A true priest should be ready and willing to give up his life for his own.
Romans 5:8
“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Ephesians 5:25
“Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”
I know, not much wiggle room there, huh?
DAILY BATTLE ORDER:
What this comes down to is love. Either a priest loves his God first and then his family enough to do what is right… Or not. There are no shortcuts and if you love enough, you won’t need a shortcut. By the grace of God, it will just happen. In the meantime, take an inventory in your mind of what steps you can take to make this happen. It’s a beautiful thing, but just like all beautiful things… you have to earn it.
