Communion

In this series, we take a look into the Biblical disciplines that Kingdom families follow…

WHY COMMUNION?

“Do this… in remembrance of me.”

The story I’m about to relate is a true and deeply personal story. I’m telling it to you in the hope that you understand the great importance of remembering the most important true story ever told.

My cousin Tommy was a “character” as they say. He was big hearted and deceptively smart, but with a wild streak. He loved fast cars. He loved to race. One summer night in the late 1970s Tom and his best buddy were racing with some other boys on a local frontage road along the interstate. Bumpers made contact, pushing them into the curb at 100+ mph. The car went airborne, snapping a telephone pole about 8 feet above the ground. Making contact roof-first, the car wrapped almost completely around the pole. When the car came to a rest, the front and rear bumper were about 2 feet apart. Just like that, the boys were gone. That destroyed car sat atop a body shop on Main Street for 30+ years as a reminder to others that street racing is never a good idea.

Over the years I have, from time to time, stopped at that body shop to look up and remember Tommy. Sometimes I would cry. Other times I would remember the good things about my beloved cousin.

In no way am I comparing the magnitude of this tragedy to that of the Crucifixion. My intent is to have all of God’s people realize the importance of remembering.

“ For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”

Communion. The Lord’s Supper. Eucharist. Whatever you call it… do it decently and in order on a regular basis. With reverence. From the heart. It is a sacred tradition. It is a hallowed discipline. It is an ordinance and direct command from the Throne of God.

DAILY BATTLE ORDER

There is no better way to reflect on the great price that was paid for you than to experience Communion. Please review 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 today and meditate on the significance/importance of the Eucharist.
