Burning Daylight

We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. -John 9:4

Yesterday was the longest day of the year. From here, every day gets shorter. The light is already leaking out, a minute or two at a time, and it won’t stop until December.

Daylight is Borrowed Time

Jesus didn’t say “we should work.” He said “we must.” 

He put a clock on it: “night is coming.” The Son of God lived with a deadline. He knew that the daylight He had was measured and that there would come an hour when the work was done whether He was finished or not.

We tell ourselves that there’s always tomorrow to lead our families, always some future season when we will finally get serious about our walk. Yes, God has a season for everything but also: “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14). 

The truth is we don’t get to decide how much we are given. We only get to decide what we do before it’s gone.

The Enemy Loves the Snooze Button

In many areas of life, the devil doesn’t need you to be more sinful. He just needs to make you slow. 

Delay is his best weapon, because a man who plans to obey later never has to obey today. He just waits, and waiting feels harmless. It isn’t.

Every hour of daylight you waste is an hour the enemy gets for free. The marriage you’ll repair “when things calm down.” The apology you’ll make “when the time is right.” The Bible you’ll open “when you’re less busy.” Calm never comes. You burn the daylight or the daylight burns without you. The man who waits for perfect light may still be waiting when it grows dark. 

Daily Battle Order

Before the sun goes down today:

Name one thing. Pick the single act of obedience you’ve been putting off. Just one. Say it out loud.

Do it before noon. Don’t schedule it. Don’t pray about it for a week. Move while the light is high.

Take the harder half. If it’s a conversation, start it. If it’s a confession, make it. Choose the part of the task you’ve been avoiding.

Finish what you start. Don’t leave it half-done for “tomorrow.” Tomorrow has its own work.

Mark the win. Tell one brother what you did today. Light spreads when you name it.

This works on the project you keep stalling. This works on the relationship you keep avoiding. This works on the sin you keep negotiating with.

You are not promised the rest of the week. You are barely promised the rest of the day. Stop saving your obedience for a season that may never come. The sun is already on its way down, and it has been since yesterday. Work while it is day.

Prayer

Father, You gave us this day and You numbered it before it began. We confess the hours we have wasted waiting for a better time that never comes. Forgive us for treating Your light as if it were ours to spend whenever we feel ready. Teach us to count our days. Give us the courage to do the one thing we have been putting off, and to do it now, while it is still day. When night comes, let us be found working, not waiting. In the name of Jesus Christ, who finished His work before His sun went down. Amen.
