Not easily broken
“And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12 ESV
We have been witnessing the balance of power in our country at work a lot in the last few weeks. Our founders showed so much wisdom when they formed our three branches of government, Executive, legislative and judicial, in a way to keep any one of them from gaining too much control over our country. This separation of powers created a balance that has served our country well. It’s certainly not pretty a lot of the time. Sometimes it seems to be failing when things aren’t going the way our personal convictions want it to go. But as we near the 250th anniversary of the founding of the country it is still at work in a way that has never been seen throughout history.
I heard a pastor once say in reference to a question about why some non-Christian marriages look better than many Christian marriages. The answer was simple. God's principles played out in any scenario still work. Whether it is meant to be intentionally Biblical or not, if we structure our country, our marriages, our businesses, our churches, etc, based on God's model of authority and balance it will work. Our balance of power honors and emulates God's picture of himself as a trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It’s not perfect, mostly because we push God out of the picture so often, but His principle still holds.
In our lives our balance of power should always include God. Marriage is such a good example. A healthy marriage has a husband and wife with God as their primary focus. These are the strongest marriages you will ever see. Put God first in any relationship and it will be it's strongest. Three strand relationships can be seen all around you if you look. God/Parent/Child. God/Boss/Employee. God/Pastor/church. Even when God is not explicitly in the three strands we see His blueprint at work - like in our American form of government. Unlike our in our form of government however, we don’t seek a separation of powers when God is in the mix. We also don’t seek equality in our three strands, but rather to see God as the supreme leader of our lives.
Daily Battle Order
Consider your relationships today. Marriage, family, work, friendships. Do you see God's model of Three Strands? If so, praise God. If not, invite Him back in as the third strand and ask Him to restore the balance of power.
