Know Your Kingdom MOS: Taking the Exam

Via The Joshua Commission

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your right hand will hold me fast. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. ~Psalm 139:9–10,16

Each member of the U.S. military has a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). Other branches use different terms, like AFSC in the Air Force, but the idea is the same. These codes categorize career fields into groups such as Combat, Logistics, Medical, or Support. Every role is vital, yet culture and bravado can suggest otherwise—that those at the “tip of the spear” matter most. But the truth is clear: if we were all infantry, we would lose—because we would die of hunger. Someone has to be the Quartermaster, and they need to be good at it.

This principle is true in God’s Kingdom as well. Before we were formed, He knew us. He designed us with a specific role and gave us the gifts to carry it out. Yet we often devalue our role—or let others tell us our function isn’t as important as another’s. That leads to frustration and doubt. The question becomes: Who are you listening to? And more importantly, what has God said about you—even before you took form?

As Kingdom men, we need to know if we’re living in the role God assigned us. We also need discernment to disciple others into their roles. Before assigning an MOS, the military gives an exam to align a troop with their natural traits and talents. In Psalm 139, David asks God to search him and reveal what is already in him—and to lead him away from anything misaligned with his true purpose.

So, what exam can we give ourselves? How can we ask God to search us?

Reflection Questions

  1. When was the last time you asked God if your role aligns with His design?

  2. Are there good things you’re doing that may still be outside His purpose?

  3. How do you invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart for distractions?

  4. What step could you take this week to confirm you’re walking in your God-given role?
