“Matthew wanted to throw a banquet to honor Jesus. So he invited Jesus to his home for dinner, along with many of Matthews fellow tax collectors and other guests.” Luke 5:29-30
We read a lot about Jesus eating and being around a table in the scriptures; feeding 5000 men, pharisees inviting him over, the last supper, and after He is risen crashing the disciple’s dinner.
Jesus used the conversations around a table to share His good news. Raised Jewish, meals like seder (Passover) were an important part of his family's faith and home lives.
While we don’t read about Jesus as a boy, we do know his parents were faithful Jews and would have celebrated many holidays, and Jesus likely learned to converse and share His faith at the family table.
You can imagine the energy around that table between his brothers (James, Jude and Simon; though some churches see them as cousins) and some unnamed sisters, plus his relatives.
Joseph certainly had his hands working, raising a family, and then settling each evening for dinner and sharing his day and faith with his family. Talk about a man with a little pressure on him, to hear “good job, my faithful servant”.
I love the Chosen series, and the relationships, laughter and joy among all who loved Jesus. The series helps me to better perceive why and how Jesus was so attractive and desirable to be around, and we see the believers at tables a lot!
Selected by God to raise Jesus; Mary and Joseph; iwere understandably good role models- demonstrating to Jesus many attributes that made Him the man he became. There can be no doubt that their table was a great place, used well.
What is your table like? Do you use it as a place of family togetherness, teaching, nourishment of body and soul, family bonding, laughter and joy?
Your table is potentially the greatest tool available to you to build your family, your friendships and your area of influence.
Some of Jesus meals were weddings, banquets, intimate events, campfire meals, and wow can you imagine the picnic with thousands; you have so many opportunities to do the same.
Daily Battle Order:
You have often read DBOs where we suggested questions and dialogs with your family at the table, for it is one of your best chances to lead by example and shape your own Holy Family.
Do you share wisdom, humor, your faith, ask questions, invite friends and neighbors?
Maybe share a dad joke with your family tonight titled “Jesus was wandering the desert, when He met an old man”
“What brings you to the desert?” asked Jesus
“I’m looking for my son, I lost him many years ago” replied the old man.
Jesus -“How did you lose him? What happened?”
Old man “I had one son, not by birth, by a heavenly miracle. He was tempted beyond belief at times. At one point, he even died, and came back to life!”
Jesus couldn’t believe it, Could this really be his father? and asked “One last question, are you by chance a carpenter?”
Old man replied “I am”
Jesus rushed forward and embraced the old man. “Father, it is I, I’ve missed you!”
The old man smiled. “I’ve missed you too, Pinnochio!”
Well I’m sure you rolled your eyes but bet your kids will laugh with you, and spur a conversation at your table!
