A More Perfect Union: A Blessed Inheritance

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one…” John 17:20–21

Standing across from the Massachusetts State House in Boston is the memorial to the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. It honors one of the first Black regiments to fight for the Union during the Civil War. Their courage helped preserve a nation, but it also exposed an unfinished truth: many who were willing to sacrifice for America’s promise had not yet fully received its blessings.

The monument doesn’t simply commemorate the past.

It asks every generation a question:

What kind of inheritance will we leave behind?

Every inheritance begins with a family. Every grandparent wonders what their grandchildren will inherit. Perhaps it’s a family business. A treasured Bible with worn pages. A home filled with memories. More often, it’s something less tangible: a family name, shared values, traditions, stories, and a way of seeing the world.

That shouldn’t surprise us. Long before God gave His people a mission, He gave them a family. Long before He entrusted them with responsibility, He invited them into relationship.

The first gift God gives His children isn’t a mission. It’s a family.

He gives us something to belong to before He gives us something to do.

On the night before the cross, Jesus prayed beyond the disciples in the room.

“I pray also for those who will believe…”

He was praying for us. Before we believed, He knew us. Before we served Him, He loved us. Before we carried His mission, He prepared our inheritance. The Gospel begins with belonging. We do not earn God’s family. We inherit it.

Every inheritance, however, carries a tension.

An inheritance is never meant to stop with us.

It is meant to be received, stewarded, and faithfully passed on.

America has wrestled with that responsibility from the very beginning.

When the framers wrote “We the People,” they identified a family before describing the work that would preserve its inheritance. Yet that family was unfinished. Many stood outside the full enjoyment of the nation’s promises. Through the amendment process, each generation wrestled with the question, Who shares in the inheritance? The nation continually sought to remove barriers and move closer to its vision of “a more perfect Union.”

History provides the frame.

The Gospel reveals the finished portrait.

Where America continues to wrestle with who belongs, Jesus has already answered the deeper question. Everyone who comes to Christ is welcomed into God’s family and becomes an heir of God’s promises.

Over the next two weeks, we’ll explore what it means to receive, steward, share, and pass on that inheritance.

But everything begins here.

Reflect on the inheritances you have received through your family, your faith, and those who invested in you. Thank God for them, and ask Him to help you become a faithful steward for those who will come after you.

Prayer: Father, thank You for inviting me into Your family through Jesus Christ. Help me never take that inheritance for granted. Teach me to steward it faithfully, share it generously, and leave a legacy that points others to the hope found in You. Amen.
