Take The Pressure Off Yourself

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

—Psalm 103:12 NIV

When I was a young Christian, I felt unworthy of God’s gift to me. I knew it was unfair, and that I didn’t deserve such grace. So I tried, without quite consciously realizing what I was doing, to compensate by “paying Him back” for it. I exerted herculean effort in an attempt to be righteous enough to achieve the grace I’d been given, yet for some reason, continued to struggle with repetitive sin habits and could not tell why. It was confusing and exhausting.

When you approach your faith this way, it turns into a religious exercise, or a set of obligatory tasks much akin to the to-do checklist sitting on your desk. Living under this pressure is the spiritual equivalent of carrying an anvil on your shoulder and wondering daily why you feel burdened.

But through the discipleship of wiser men, God began to show me the beautiful truth of Psalm 103… that His character is “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in love”... that He “does not treat us as our sins deserve, or repay us according to our iniquities”... and that He has already removed my transgressions “as far as the east is from the west.” That is infinitely far—regardless of whether I feel like He should have or not!

And living in that realization—that He has already done all the work and there’s nothing I can do to add or subtract from that—has allowed me to live in freedom AND, paradoxically, greater righteousness, by simply drawing close to Him and more of becoming the person He already says I am.

Men, don’t overcomplicate and over-systematize the Simple Gospel.

Daily Battle Order:

Preach the gospel to yourself today. Pray this:

“Jesus, you have already done all the work for me. There is nothing I can add or take away from that by my personal efforts. But teach me to abide in intimacy with you so that you can produce fruit that will last through me. Amen.”
