“If anyone thinks himself to be religious, (fearing God) and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, ( his values and passions) this man’s religion is worthless.” James 1:26
I was coming home from school in third grade and got into a fight, the other kid punched me and I think I may have had a bloody nose but the fight ended and I went home. I told my dad what happened and he was really upset with me for fighting. He told me I wasn’t to fight for any reason. That sure stuck with me because I used the power of my tongue to attack others and defend myself from then on, or using my tongue to make jokes about everything and sadly, this did not end just because I accepted Christ, got married, or had children. It took me many years to learn how to fight the good fight, and bridle my tongue.
The warning is quite clear, Jesus tells us in Matthew 12, “on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
