And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 1:6 ESV
Hot, Sweaty, Smelly, Uncomfortable, No Sleep, Dirty Showers...
All words to describe my son's thoughts when I mentioned that we were going camping in the July summer heat.
We had been invited by Aare, AKA Art The Chef, to join a group of Christian men known as The Joshua Commission.
I've known Norm since our days at Cap City Church in Alexandria but had not seen him in years.
My two teenage sons were reluctant but also excited as they love their "Uncle Aare".
Let me correct myself, they LOVE Aare's cooking! Everyone does.
Upon arrival in Fredericksburg on a Friday we were relieved to see that clouds covered the sky and the temperature that night was cool.
That first night my sons were happy to see that they were not relegated to the kid's corner, rather they were included in group discussions like young men.
On Saturday we toured various points in the battle of Fredericksburg along with roughly 20 other men.
Each stop included a discussion and a lesson to be implemented in our lives.
Every battle has a turning point and my sons and I experienced such a moment on one stop.
We were instructed to write down a lie that we believed about ourselves.
We were to hand this rock to another person.
While facing each other this person stated the lie and then threw the rock as far as they could into the Rappahannock River.
Gone forever was that lie.
My sons and I shared this moment with each of us being completely vulnerable with one another.
What a life-changing moment!
Around the campfire that Saturday night both of my sons joined in the discussions with the other men.
The next day, as we traveled home, they shared that this was the first time they felt like men.
Phillipians 1:6 stands out to us at this point.
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
We are still in a battle, the 3 of us. We covet your prayers as the enemy is still attacking.
But I stand confident that the war has already been won.
Fredericksburg was a turning point in our lives and we are grateful to The Joshua Commission for including us
