23 Surely they shall not see the land which I swear unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it: 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still. - Numbers 14:23 & 38
Remember my story from the DBO on Obedience – Not IF, But WHEN. A former sailor I had chosen my own destination, not my Commanders. But during that period, while my plans were falling apart, His plan was falling into place. What God allowed in the messiest time in my life, was also about what he allowed in the fullness of his kindness and mercy; not just to me, but my wife and our family.
It wasn’t anything I said or did, though I pleaded with Him over many things. It was His way of showing me I was not in control. Much like the children of Israel in the desert, I did not see the “promised land” as I had envisioned. God still punishes sin. However, while disobedient in much, I remained faithful in some ways – to a terrible job, a stressful home and family, seeking prayer and godly counsel from close friends, and a rock-solid church that poured out their love for us in acts of service again and again.
When God saw fit to move us back to where we had come from, it was in His time and under the right conditions. I wanted to go back regardless, however, my wife set stipulations and then we watched God check off every one of them. It hasn’t all been “grapes in clusters” (my reference to the kids song, 12 Men Went to Spy Out Canaan), but MY GOD is good, He’s so good to me and I am grateful.
